Why ArnoldAnd?

ArnoldAnd is more than a name—it’s a philosophy.

Architecture isn’t created in isolation. Every project is shaped by collaboration, conversation, and the push and pull of ideas. That’s why I chose ArnoldAnd — because great design isn’t just about me. It’s about And.

Arnold And Clients. Listening, understanding, and bringing their vision to life.

Arnold And Builders. Partnering with skilled craftspeople to turn ideas into reality.

Arnold And Context. Designing spaces that respect history while embracing the future.

Arnold And Innovation. Exploring new materials, technologies, and ideas that push design forward.

Arnold And You. Because every project starts with a conversation.

At the heart of Architect Matthew Arnold’s work is a dedication to elevating the lives and businesses of his clients through thoughtful and visually striking architecture and design that is profoundly impactful, tailored to each client’s individual goals.

New England Expertise
As a Boston Architect, Matthew brings a deeply rooted design expertise in the Boston area to each of his projects. Born and raised outside of Boston, Matthew worked construction in high school falling in love with building and design. He received his Masters of Architecture from Northeastern University, before working at several award-winning Boston architecture firms including Hacin.

Matthew’s portfolio includes well-known commercial, residential and retail projects in the Boston area including District Hall, Black Lamb, and the James Beard-nominated Shore Leave. Local clients rely on Matthew for his ability to reinterpret the New England vernacular for contemporary life along with his real estate, designer and builder network in Boston and MetroWest.  His clients appreciate Matt’s extensive knowledge of New England Architecture and building.

A Multi-Disciplinary Approach
At ArnoldAnd Architecture, Matthew is able to move between different architectural eras, types of projects and areas of expertise. He takes on both residential and commercial projects seamlessly moving between the two. His interdisciplinary expertise marries architecture with interiors, branding, and real estate development. Matt is known for being able to merge historical or classic architecture with updated concepts and design to create enduring and timeless architecture that lasts.

Never heard of an ADU? Well, let me tell you… A Never heard of an ADU? Well, let me tell you…

ADU stands for Accessory Dwelling Unit — basically, a smaller, self-contained home on the same property as your main house. Think backyard cottage, garage apartment, or even a basement with its own kitchen and entrance.

They’re flexible, functional, and increasingly popular. Perfect for multigenerational living, guest space, rental income, or just adding options to your property without moving.

I love ADUs because they’re not just about square footage — they’re about possibility. And yeah… they’re kind of the Swiss Army knife of houses. Small footprint, big impact.

Curious if an ADU could work on your property? Drop a comment or reach out — I’ve got plenty to say.

Big milestone for ArnoldAnd Development! We offic Big milestone for ArnoldAnd Development!
We officially closed on our Beech Street project October 1st!

After almost two years of design, negotiation, and coordination, it feels great to move this one forward. Projects like this are never overnight, they take persistence, teamwork, and vision to bring across the finish line.

I’m especially excited about this being the first official business collaboration for ArnoldAnd. Partnering with Evergreen Property solutions, this one is ArnoldAnd Evergreen — a partnership I’m really looking forward to growing.

Can’t wait to share more as we bring three thoughtfully designed townhomes to life here.

Do I really need an office… Lately I’ve been Do I really need an office…

Lately I’ve been thinking about what it means to grow with purpose. ArnoldAnd is growing, but a question keeps coming up—do I need a space? An office? A studio? A retail spot?

This isn’t just about real estate—it’s about how I want to work, collaborate, and build something that lasts.

Sharing it as part of Peek Into the Process because this is all part of the journey—not just architecture, but building a practice too.

Curious to hear from others—when did you know it was time for space?

Who’s Arnold? That’s the question Kevin Crado Who’s Arnold?

That’s the question Kevin Cradock asked me on The Boiler Room Podcast.
And the answer is more than just a name, It’s my story.

The kid who was always the teacher’s pet.
The son of an audio engineer for Aerosmith & Boston.
The architect who spent 15 years at one firm before betting on himself and building something new.

We talked about taking risks, growing with purpose, and finding inspiration in unexpected places—music, family, and the communities we design and build for.

If you’ve ever wondered “Who’s Arnold?” this episode is a good place to start.

Great architecture can’t stand alone, it needs i Great architecture can’t stand alone, it needs its landscape.

We put so much effort into the architecture of a home but how it sits in the landscape is just as important. At Charles Cove House, the design ideas that shaped the architecture weave their way into the yard: old and new materials meeting and creating seamless connections.

Good architecture doesn’t exist in isolation. It thrives when paired with a thoughtful landscape. And this house is going to have one that truly elevates the experience. Can’t wait for you to see it.

The choreography of construction is on full displa The choreography of construction is on full display right now.

This is one of my favorite moments in a project: the finishing touches. Piece by piece, detail by detail, the vision we’ve been working toward finally comes to life.

The choreography of construction is at its peak here — every trade, every hand on site moving in sync, from contractor to designer, client to delivery crew. Everyone has to row in the same direction to bring a project like this together.

It’s in these final moments that a house transforms into a home — and the story we’ve been building all along truly comes into focus.

Minot Beach House This coastal Victorian has so m Minot Beach House

This coastal Victorian has so much character with a wraparound porch, detailed trim, and a series of smaller connected rooms. But those charming spaces, combined with the porch, often leave the interior feeling darker and tighter than it should.

Our goal is to keep the definition of spaces, dining, kitchen, living, while creating stronger physical and visual connections that make the home feel more open and spacious. It’s a good-sized plan, but the way it’s currently arranged hides its potential.

We’re introducing skylights over the porch in key spots to bring direct light deeper inside. Glass and metal doors, framed openings, and elegant trim details will tie spaces together. At the center, a contemporary kitchen package will balance modern function with the home’s historic character.

This project is for a vibrant family of four (plus two dogs) who are active, social, and deeply connected to their community. The Minot Beach House is designed to enhance that lifestyle with light-filled, connected, and true to its Victorian roots while ready for modern life.

Weaving the old and the new. The Charles Cove Hou Weaving the old and the new.

The Charles Cove House is all about honoring an 1860 home while modernizing it for the 21st century. The darker siding represents the original house, horizontal and linear in character. The white siding represents the new addition, vertical, crisp, and contemporary.

By contrasting direction and color, the design visually weaves old and new together. The existing home remains legible, while the addition pushes forward, creating a layered conversation between history and modernity.

Architecture at its best doesn’t erase; it evolves. This home tells its story in every line and material choice.

The new layout opens up the space, giving it a flow that works for how the homeowners actually live today.

Excited to be included in @bankerandtradesman this Excited to be included in @bankerandtradesman this week in an article about working across both residential and hospitality projects.

For me, there’s always been a natural overlap—hospitality design teaches us about comfort and flow, and those same principles carry into the homes I design. At the same time, the intimacy and personal scale of residential work inform how I approach larger spaces.

I’m honored to be featured on the @businessofarch podcast, a show I’ve long admired for its insightful discussions on the intersection of design and business.

In this episode, I share my journey from traditional practice to launching ArnoldAnd, embracing the architect-as-developer model, and building a design-led development firm rooted in collaboration and context.

A heartfelt thank you to @rionwillard for the engaging conversation and for creating a platform that empowers architects to think beyond the conventional.

Big milestone for ArnoldAnd Development — we rec Big milestone for ArnoldAnd Development — we received ZBA approval last week for our Beech Street project: three thoughtfully designed townhouses in Roslindale.

At ArnoldAnd, we believe design should lead development. This project reflects that mission — architecture rooted in context, guided by purpose, and built for long-term value.

These homes were carefully designed to fit the scale and character of the street. Development doesn’t have to be disruptive — it can be additive, responsive, and even restorative.

Getting here took time, persistence, and collaboration. Zoning approvals are never simple — but they’re an essential part of the architect-as-developer model: staying close to the details and pushing through with intention.

We’re excited to move from concept to construction. Follow along as we bring these homes — and this vision — to life.
