Nestled within its unique history, Clinker House is undergoing a thoughtful transformation with a second-floor addition designed to honor the past while embracing the present. The home’s defining feature, clinker bricks—known for their rich textures, earthy colors, and irregular shapes—provides warmth and charm that are central to the house’s identity. What was once considered imperfection now stands as a symbol of craftsmanship and character.

A Thoughtful Approach to Design
Designing this addition has been an exercise in balance—respecting the home’s original clinker brickwork while integrating a contemporary aesthetic to support the needs of modern living. My process begins with understanding the home on a deeper level, immersing myself in its story and paying close attention to how it connects with its surroundings. How does the light shift throughout the day? How do its materials age and evolve? How does it feel as you move from room to room?

Key Design Considerations:

  • Seamless Integration: The new addition is designed to feel like a natural extension of the original structure. From the scale and proportion to the materials and details, every element is chosen to complement and enhance the existing architecture.
  • Material Harmony: While preserving the clinker brickwork, we’ve introduced materials like wood and modern cladding to bridge the gap between historic and contemporary design.
  • Light and Flow: Careful attention is given to how natural light moves through the space, creating warmth and a sense of openness while ensuring privacy and comfort.
  • Functionality for Modern Living: Beyond aesthetics, this addition is about creating practical, comfortable spaces that meet the demands of today’s families without compromising on charm.

Why Clinker Bricks Matter
There’s a reason these imperfect, handmade bricks remain relevant today—they tell a story of resilience, craftsmanship, and authenticity. Incorporating them into this modern addition isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about preserving the heart of the home while creating new opportunities for connection and growth.

Working with Matt on the Clinker House has been an incredible experience. From the start, he understood our vision and brought creative ideas that honored the home’s unique clinker brick character while making it more functional for modern living. His attention to detail, ability to problem-solve, and deep understanding of materials and design have been invaluable. He’s helped us navigate every step with clarity and confidence, and we couldn’t be more excited to see this project take shape.”
