Meet ArnoldAnd. This new Boston architectural firm takes a client-focused approach to modern, sustainable design.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Joe D’Eramo, 617-848-0848, [email protected]

Creativity, functionality, sustainability and client-driven design. That’s the foundation upon which Boston architect Matthew Arnold recently unveiled ArnoldAnd, a boutique architectural practice serving residential, commercial and hospitality client in Boston and beyond.

Prior to launching ArnoldAnd, Arnold has worked as an architect in the city of Boston and surrounding areas for the past two decades, most notably at Hacin of Boston’s South End. In that time, he earned a reputation for work that masterfully blended modern design and sustainability features within historic homes and buildings—both throughout the city and greater Boston. So much so that when he launched ArnoldAnd at the end of 2024, Modern Luxury Interiors Magazine named Arnold as part of its “Ones to Watch” class of 2025.

“At ArnoldAnd, our mission is to create a design with our clients that elevates their life, enhances the community and truly reflects their vision—with me being the instrument that makes it happen,” said Arnold. “How we get there is through a close, collaborative process and a real attention to detail—understanding what matters in the day-to-day lives of our clients.”

To help launch his new company, Arnold hired AgencyBel (www.agencybel.com) of Milton, Mass. to create the ArnoldAnd brand, including website, social media and other collaterals.

“I chose ArnoldAnd as the company name because architecture isn’t created in isolation. Every project is shaped by collaboration, conversation, and the push and pull of ideas,” said Arnold. “So, each project truly is Arnold and you name it…clients…builders…context…innovation. We’re ArnoldAnd because every project starts with a conversation.”

One of those projects is the Charles Cove house in Dover, Mass. Originally built in 1868, the house has undergone a number of additions over the years, the last being in the 1960s.

“This is a signature ArnoldAnd project with a modern family in a classically historic New England home,” said Arnold. The challenge is being mindful and respectful of the 1860s portion of the house while still creating something that’s new, exciting, and is the way the family wants to live in the home.”

On the commercial/hospitality side, ArnoldAnd is working with Chef Colin Lynch, of Traveler Street Hospitality in the South End, on the design of a casual dining restaurant in Allston.

“Travel Street Hospitality’s other establishments are high-end. I know because I worked on the design at my previous job. The unique design challenge on this project has been translating that high-end restaurant expertise into a relaxed and welcoming pizza spot,” said Arnold. “It’s also been a fun challenge, and I think patrons will be pleasantly surprised to see how a renowned Chef known for fine dining can figuratively let his hair down.”

ArnoldAnd’s expertise extends across residential, commercial, and hospitality projects, serves discerning clients in Boston, Metro West, and beyond, offering tailored designs that strengthen community connections and transform the way people live, work, and interact with their surroundings. By setting new standards for innovation, sustainability, and beauty, ArnoldAnd is poised to redefine the role of architecture in daily life.

Matthew Arnold, a native of Medway, Massachusetts, received his undergraduate degree from New England Tech in Warwick, Rhode Island and a master’s degree from Northeastern University. Married, he and his wife Hope live with their son Aiden in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston.

Minot Beach House This coastal Victorian has so m Minot Beach House

This coastal Victorian has so much character with a wraparound porch, detailed trim, and a series of smaller connected rooms. But those charming spaces, combined with the porch, often leave the interior feeling darker and tighter than it should.

Our goal is to keep the definition of spaces, dining, kitchen, living, while creating stronger physical and visual connections that make the home feel more open and spacious. It’s a good-sized plan, but the way it’s currently arranged hides its potential.

We’re introducing skylights over the porch in key spots to bring direct light deeper inside. Glass and metal doors, framed openings, and elegant trim details will tie spaces together. At the center, a contemporary kitchen package will balance modern function with the home’s historic character.

This project is for a vibrant family of four (plus two dogs) who are active, social, and deeply connected to their community. The Minot Beach House is designed to enhance that lifestyle with light-filled, connected, and true to its Victorian roots while ready for modern life.

Weaving the old and the new. The Charles Cove Hou Weaving the old and the new.

The Charles Cove House is all about honoring an 1860 home while modernizing it for the 21st century. The darker siding represents the original house, horizontal and linear in character. The white siding represents the new addition, vertical, crisp, and contemporary.

By contrasting direction and color, the design visually weaves old and new together. The existing home remains legible, while the addition pushes forward, creating a layered conversation between history and modernity.

Architecture at its best doesn’t erase; it evolves. This home tells its story in every line and material choice.

The new layout opens up the space, giving it a flow that works for how the homeowners actually live today.

It’s part of a whole-home transformation where every room — kitchen to bath — is being reimagined to bring modern function into a classic New England frame.

Clean lines, better flow, and more light — plus a new island at the heart of it all.

We also added custom mudroom millwork at the garage entry so there’s a proper landing spot for bags, coats, and everything else life throws at you.

Big thanks to @northewoodworking for building the custom kitchen and mudroom cabinetry, and @aabuilding for making it all happen on site.

Excited to be included in @bankerandtradesman this Excited to be included in @bankerandtradesman this week in an article about working across both residential and hospitality projects.

For me, there’s always been a natural overlap—hospitality design teaches us about comfort and flow, and those same principles carry into the homes I design. At the same time, the intimacy and personal scale of residential work inform how I approach larger spaces.

In this episode, I share my journey from traditional practice to launching ArnoldAnd, embracing the architect-as-developer model, and building a design-led development firm rooted in collaboration and context.

A heartfelt thank you to @rionwillard for the engaging conversation and for creating a platform that empowers architects to think beyond the conventional.

Big milestone for ArnoldAnd Development — we rec Big milestone for ArnoldAnd Development — we received ZBA approval last week for our Beech Street project: three thoughtfully designed townhouses in Roslindale.

At ArnoldAnd, we believe design should lead development. This project reflects that mission — architecture rooted in context, guided by purpose, and built for long-term value.

These homes were carefully designed to fit the scale and character of the street. Development doesn’t have to be disruptive — it can be additive, responsive, and even restorative.

Getting here took time, persistence, and collaboration. Zoning approvals are never simple — but they’re an essential part of the architect-as-developer model: staying close to the details and pushing through with intention.

We’re excited to move from concept to construction. Follow along as we bring these homes — and this vision — to life.

A New Take on a New England Classic… We’re br A New Take on a New England Classic…

We’re breathing new life into a center entrance colonial—a housing type that’s iconic in New England, with its symmetry, tradition, and timeless charm. But this client came to us with a bold vision: to honor the original character while transforming the home to reflect a more modern aesthetic.

This project is happening in two phases. Phase one is all about upgrading and modernizing the interior—refining the layout, updating finishes, and reimagining the home for how the family lives today.

Phase two: That’s where things get exciting. We’re designing a modern addition that intentionally stands apart from the original house—a bold contrast that reflects the evolution of the home and the people who live in it.

Framing 101: Before a single wall goes up, we take Framing 101: Before a single wall goes up, we take the time to lay everything out right on the deck.

Why?

Because it lets us step inside the design before it becomes three-dimensional.

Walking the plan at full scale helps us double-check dimensions, fine-tune placement, and catch any adjustments early—while it’s still easy to make changes.

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes moments that makes a big difference in getting the build just right.
