Nestled within its unique history, Clinker House is undergoing a thoughtful transformation with a second-floor addition designed to honor the past while embracing the present. The home’s defining feature, clinker bricks—known for their rich textures, earthy colors, and irregular shapes—provides warmth and charm that are central to the house’s identity.

A New Take on a New England Classic…

We’re breathing new life into a center entrance colonial—a housing type that’s iconic in New England, with its symmetry, tradition, and timeless charm. But this client came to us with a bold vision: to honor the original character while transforming the home to reflect a more modern aesthetic.

This project is happening in two phases. Phase one is all about upgrading and modernizing the interior—refining the layout, updating finishes, and reimagining the home for how the family lives today.

Phase two: That’s where things get exciting. We’re designing a modern addition that intentionally stands apart from the original house—a bold contrast that reflects the evolution of the home and the people who live in it.

While it’s a hallmark of older homes, it also gave us the opportunity to replace the floor structure. The result? No relation is one of my favorite spaces I’ve had the opportunity to design. The warm wood details, inspired by the bowls traditionally used to prepare sushi rice, ground the space in authenticity and craftsmanship. At its heart is the pitched roof—a striking feature that not only defines the intimate dining area but also creates a unique interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the omakase experience.

Tucked away at the rear of a fully submerged bar and restaurant, this hidden gem invites discovery, offering diners a sense of exclusivity and connection. The design balances tradition and modern elegance, honoring the art of sushi while creating a space that feels timeless yet distinct. It’s a place where every detail has a story, from the materials to the layout, all working together to elevate the dining experience.

Clinker bricks, known for their unique textures, colors, and irregular shapes, make this house stand out. These bricks, once considered imperfect, bring warmth, character, and charm to the design in a way that’s impossible to replicate.

Designing this addition has been about finding a balance between respecting the original clinker brickwork and bringing in a fresh, modern aesthetic. My process begins by immersing myself in the home’s story – understanding how it sits on the site, how it interacts with light, and how it feels as you move through each space. I study its forms and materials, ensuring that the addition feels like a natural extension of what’s already there while supporting the needs of contemporary living.

Throwback to 2016 when I took a big leap into deve

Throwback to 2016 when I took a big leap into development with my first project in Jamaica Plain. This was the start of my journey as both an architect and developer, where I had to balance the creative vision with the financial realities of the market. As an architect developer, I wasn’t just designing—I was thinking about how to make the project functional and financially viable.

This 2-family project brings 3 levels of modern townhouse-style living while preserving the charm of the original home. By placing the new addition behind the existing structure, we maintained the street’s character and enhanced the original house color to blend seamlessly with its surroundings. This design honors the past while offering new spacious, contemporary living. I’m grateful for the challenges, my own growth, and everything this project set in motion.
